Roger Federer vs Stan Wawrinka

While Wawrinka outlasted Stefanos Tsitsipas in a five-hour, nine minute classic 7-6 (6) 5-7 6-4 3-6 8-6 that left his opponent in tears, the elder Swiss eased past Leonardo Mayer 6-2 6-3 6-3 and still hasn’t dropped a set this fortnight.

Four years after his last appearance at the French Open, the 37-year-old is looking to go one step further and reach the last four.

A win could potentially set him up with a semi-final match against his old foe Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals.

Federer is 25-3 all-time versus Wawrinka. But the younger Swiss actually has beaten Federer in two of their past three matchups on clay. And the unsettled weather forecast — rain and thunderstorms are predicted Tuesday — could force a delay that will benefit Wawrinka.

Fresh from his straight-sets victory over Leonardo Mayer, Federer is looking to progress against his fellow Swiss today in the quarter-final.

Standing in his way is Wawrinka, who battled past Stefanos Tsitsipas in the last round.

And Wawrinka will now face his fellow Swiss Federer in the last eight on Tuesday.

Speaking in an interview with Eurosport, Federer was asked for his take on Wawrinka’s battle with Tsitsipas and said: “That was unbelievable. I saw some of it, I was in the press conference.

“I think I was also playing at the same time. And I watched pretty much the fifth set, that was unbelievable.

“It had everything, the crowds loved it. They probably would have liked a little more too. But Stan was happy it ended.

This year, Federer is making his first appearance at the French Open since 2015 when he was beaten by his Swiss compatriot in the quarter-final.

Wawrinka would go on to win the final over Novak Djokovic but four years later, Federer has a chance of revenge over the three-time Grand Slam winner.

Interestingly, Federer holds a 22-3 winning record but all of Wawrinka wins have come on clay.

Speaking in an interview with Eurosport, Federer was asked whether he would have the match from 2015 on his mind when he takes to the court.

PARIS — Roger Federer has a chance to take a measure of revenge against friend and fellow Swiss player Stan Wawrinka in the French Open quarterfinals.

Wawrinka beat Federer in straight sets in their last Roland Garros meeting at the same stage four years ago.

Until last week, that 2015 match was also the last time Federer played in the clay-court Grand Slam tournament, having missed the 2016 edition to rest a sore back, then skipping the clay season altogether the following two years.
